Denaturalization is the act of revoking a person’s citizenship. In the United States, denaturalization can only be accomplished through a court order. During the Trump administration, there were several cases of denaturalization, including the case of a woman who was denaturalized after it was discovered that she had lied about her involvement in Nazi war crimes.
The Trump administration’s use of denaturalization was controversial, with some arguing that it was an abuse of power. Others argued that the administration was simply enforcing the law. In 2025, the Supreme Court ruled that the Trump administration’s use of denaturalization was unconstitutional. The Court held that the administration had not proven that the individuals who were denaturalized had lied on their citizenship applications.
