Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by Hugh Wheeler. It is based on the 1973 play of the same name by Christopher Bond. The musical tells the story of Benjamin Barker, a barber who is unjustly imprisoned and returns to London seeking revenge on the corrupt judge who framed him. Todd becomes a serial killer, murdering his victims and disposing of their bodies in meat pies.
Sweeney Todd has been praised for its dark humor, complex characters, and powerful score. It has been produced numerous times around the world, and has been adapted into several films. The most recent Broadway revival opened in 2017 and starred Josh Groban as Sweeney Todd and Annaleigh Ashford as Mrs. Lovett. The production was a critical and commercial success, and won the Tony Award for Best Musical Revival.
