Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, was first observed on May 30, 1868, to honor the Union soldiers who died in the Civil War. In 1971, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which established Memorial Day as a federal holiday on the last Monday in May.
