The Washington State Legislature has passed a new law that increases the fines for driving with expired license plates. Effective January 1, 2025, the fine for a first offense will be $100, and the fine for a second offense within five years will be $200. Previously, the fines were $50 and $100, respectively.
The new law was passed in an effort to improve public safety. Expired license plates make it difficult for law enforcement to identify vehicles and track down drivers who are involved in accidents or other crimes. The increased fines are intended to deter drivers from letting their license plates expire and to encourage them to keep their vehicles registered and insured.
