April 15, 2025, is a significant date for several reasons. It marks the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), a landmark achievement in the fight for gender equality. Additionally, it is the date by which the United Nations has set a goal to achieve universal access to sustainable energy.
The ERA, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex, was first introduced in Congress in 1923. After decades of debate and setbacks, it was finally passed by Congress in 1972 and sent to the states for ratification. However, the ERA fell three states short of the 38 needed for ratification, and it remains unratified to this day.
